The euro was introduced as the official financial unit in 1999, meaning that countries agreed to use it for accounting, banking transactions, and financial contracts between nations, even though people did not yet have euro banknotes and coins and still used national currencies such as the German mark or the French franc. Later, in 2002, euro banknotes and coins were issued, allowing people to make purchases and transactions directly with the euro.
